"Prairie Fire Smoke"<br />
Konza Prairie Biological Station, Kansas<br />

The Nature Conservancy and Kansas State University operate Konza as an outdoor laboratory to study prairie ecosystems. Fire is a natural part of prairie ecosystems and its absence allows woody plants to encroach onto the prairie. The role of fire on the prairie has been studied at Konza for four decades and burning was being conducted during my visit. This photograph shows smoke and the effectiveness of fire as a means to retard woody plant encroachment.
