Grass Clumps - Konza Prairie Biological Station
Konza Prairie Biological Station, Kansas
Prairie tallgrass can grow over 8 feet high by the end of a growing season. This canopy retards additional growth the following spring by reducing the amount of sunlight and water that reach the soil. Spring burning helps eliminate the canopy along with numerous invasive woody plant species. This photograph shows grass clumps that are exposed to sunlight and woody plants that were killed by recent burning.
