The Elkmont area of the Great Smoky Mountains NP offers a light show in mid-June which should be on everyone's bucket list. The park has 14 species of fireflies (lightning bugs) including the rare and spectacular Synchronous fireflies which synchronize their light blinking with each other. The fireflies repeatedly flash in synchrony until they need to rest and recharge. Four successive flashes from several individual fireflies can be seen in this photograph. The was observed as four successive waves of light passing through the dark forest.
